One thing that the Neif Yorker editor never failed to do was to come to his writers and tell them any praise he'd heard about their work, although he sometimes did it scoffingly, punctuating the recital of what he had heard with his well-known "Hogwash" or "Don't give it a second thought." One day, again in 1933, he lurched into my office and blurted, "Dorothy Parker says Hemingway told her that your My Life and Hard Times is the best writing coming out of America now."
"I am a remarkable fellow," I told him, "whose quality is detected by all critical intelligences, with the single exception, of course, of yours."
"Nuts!" said Ross.
A few weeks later he banged into my office again to say, in high glee, "It now turns out that Hemingay said that about your writing just to get Faulkner down. Left-handed compliment. Don't take it seriously, don't give it a second thought. If he did mean what he said, why the hell doesn't he give you a blurb for your book when it comes out this fall?" I told him that Hemingway did not write blurbs for anybody's books, but when My Life and Hard Times was published, its dust jacket contained a quote from a letter Hemingay had written me from Madrid, which began: "Even when Thurber was writing under the name of Alice B. Toklas, we knew he had it in him if he could only get it out." Ross had a lot of fun with that.
